Palm tree pruning
Phoenix, Washingtonia, Trachycarpus… On the French Riviera, palms are part of the garden. Cédric prunes them cleanly and safely, without weakening them.

When should a palm be pruned?
- Dead fronds hang below the crown
- Fruit and flower stalks dirty the terrace or the pool
- The palm has grown too tall to maintain from the ground
- Fronds are yellowing or the crown is drooping: its condition needs checking
How Cédric prunes a palm
- 1
Remove only what is dead or damaged
Green fronds feed the palm: cutting too many weakens it. A full crown is kept.
- 2
Clean the trunk
The bases of old fronds are cut cleanly for a neat trunk.
- 3
Cut fruit and flower stalks
Less mess on the ground, and a palm that keeps its energy.
- 4
Check its condition at the same time
Pruning is a chance to spot signs of pests such as the red palm weevil or the palm moth, both present on the French Riviera.
Good to know
- Over-pruning into a "feather duster" weakens the palm: only dead or troublesome fronds are removed.
- Phoenix fronds carry long spines: pruning them takes experience and suitable equipment.
- A well-kept palm is generally pruned once a year.
Frequently asked questions
When should a palm be pruned?
Usually once a year, ideally outside periods of hard frost. A dead or broken frond that could fall can be removed at any time.
Should green fronds be cut?
No, or very few. They feed the palm. Dead, damaged or troublesome fronds are removed, keeping a full crown.
How can I tell if my palm has red palm weevil?
Central fronds drooping or drying, a misshapen crown, holes or sawdust at the base of the fronds: these are warning signs. Cédric can inspect your palm and advise on treatment.
